The READ program was developed to provide children a safe and beneficial way to volunteer at the shelter.  This six week pilot program encourages children to Read and Engage with Animals Daily, by volunteering at the shelter and reading to their pets at home. This symbiotic program benefits the child as reading to animals has shown to encourage learning, builds confidence and creates a sense of worth.  The shelter animal benefits by creating a calm and soothing environment to help minimize or reduce stress.  AWL is seeking children ages 7-14 to participate in our pilot READ program. The program will be held on Saturdays from 11am-12pm at the AWL shelter. The program will start with an orientation on Saturday, July 9 2016. Program size is limited, please contact the shelter at 330-539-5300 and for more information or to sign up for the program.
